Question:
Hello Code Question of the Day. On seldom occasion we need to inspect power panels for various reasons, whether it be to update the panel schedule or just visually inspect a panel without the cover on. My question is: Are there any exceptions that allows for the removal of a power panel cover while it is still energized to allow for inspect without crossing the plane of the cabinet?
The reason for not deenergizing the equipment is the panel in question supplies critical equipment. Thank you for your response and appreciate the great service you provide, Anthony T

Answer:
Hello Anthony, glad to hear you are enjoying the CQD. The 2021 edition of NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, will be the reference for this question.
NFPA 70E
does not have exceptions for performing energized work, however Section 110.4(A)-(D) provides guidance on minimum criteria
employers will need to establish in order to demonstrate energized work is justified. It is also important to mention that Section 110.1 requires employers to make hazard elimination the
first priority in the implementation of safety-related work practices.
