Question:
When using a piece of rigid conduit as a light stanchion does the rigid conduit supporting standards still apply? 5ft max if there is no structure to support to? Or does it fall under a different section lighting stanchions or light poles? Currently I have an installation of 1 ½” rigid is run around the perimeter of a stairway landing with “T”s in place for the 1 ½” rigid going vertical for light “Stanchions” supporting an outdoor light fixture at the top. From the last support below top of handrail to the end of conduit what would be the max length?

A
Answer:
Hey Gregory thanks for your question. Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC) must be secured and supported as stated in 344.30. Additional rules for raceways used to support luminaires are in 314.23(F). In addition to other conditions Exception 2 to 314.23(F) limits the length from the last point of support to 3 ft.
