Question:
Hi Charlie,
Appreciate the time you take to share your knowledge.
I often have difficulty with exterior deck stair illumination. The IRC requirement is vague and seldom enforced by the local AHJ. Can you discuss NEC code sections relating to exterior deck stairs illumination? I am aware of the receptacle requirements.
Thank you, Burdell (Dell) Oye

Answer:
Hey Burdell thanks for your question and the appreciation. It is mostly because of readers' comments and questions that we can do this. The rules for lighting outlets are in Part III of Article 210. A wall switched lighting outlet is required in stairways as stated in 210.70(A)(2)(a). One is also required for exterior entrances or exits with grade level access as stated in 210.70(A)(2)(b). The term stairway is not defined in the NEC but there are definitions in the Glossary of Terms which can be found at nfpa.org. The use of the word "in" related to stairways might need some interpretation. Perhaps some folks don't want permanent lighting that could spotlight them in a compromising situation on the deck.
