Question:
Hello, My name is Michael, I am an electrician in New Jersey. I just want to say thank you for all that you do for us out there in the field, I read these questions and answers with my crew every day, we are all very grateful.
My question is with regards to pool lighting installations. It is my understanding that any and all pool lights that are underwater should be terminated in a pool box. I have very little experience with pools, however, in this particular instance, I have 12 Low voltage lights in the pool all terminating in one central location with switch legs going back in to the house. The central location happens to be a retaining wall behind the pool that is approximately 4 feet above the water level. What I would like to do is pipe all of the lights into one large quazite box, and pipe everything underground back into the house. I just don't know if this is a violation.
Thanks again, Michael Nolan

Answer:
Hey Michael thanks for your question and the compliment. Conduit connected junction boxes that extend to forming shells or mounting brackets of a no-niche luminaire must be listed, labeled, and identified as a swimming pool junction boxes as stated in 680.24(A)(1).
Swimming pool installations have a lot of unique rules and the risk of shock and electrocution increases due to the wet and corrosive environments usually present. Consider having someone experienced in pool installations work with you or mentor you until you gain that experience.
