Question:
I look foward to CQD every morning. It's nice to see so many interesting topics and educated insights to so many questions.
My topic is the interpretation and enforcement of 314.27. For over 40 years it has become common practice to install standard round nailin boxes, and old work round boxes for ceiling luminares. These boxes have a rating less than 50 lbs. I've never failed an inspection, nor have I heard of any fails from other contractors. It seems to me the only acceptable box for ceiling lights would need to be fan rated boxes because these seem to be the only boxes readily available. Am I misinterpreting this article?

Answer:
Hey Barry thanks for your question, it's good to hear you enjoy CQD. Outlet boxes used as ceiling outlets must be suitable for supporting a 50 lb. luminaire. The carton (cardboard box the outlet boxes are shipped in) is marked FOR FIXTURE/LUMINAIRE SUPPORT. If the outlet box is suitable for supporting more than 50 lbs. it must be listed and marked as stated in 314.27(A)(2).
