Question:
Good morning to you, the panel of code question of the day. I won't go back and reference all that has been discussed regarding the definition of an outlet but to ask you of your opinion regarding the new requirement of gfi protection on a dishwasher. A disconnect in most cases is required at the dishwasher location. If the disconnect were a switch, would the gfi protection be necessary since the switch doesn't consume current and the final connection is made at the dishwasher? As I've been instructed, just going by the wording in the code book, thanks.

Answer:
Hey Eric thanks for your question and good morning to you. A disconnecting means might be required at the dishwasher, depending on the specific method of wiring as covered in 422.31. 422.33, and 422.34. The GFCI protection stated in 210.8(D) is not required for the disconnecting means but somewhere the dishwasher is connected to the wiring system and that point is defined as an outlet as defined in Article 100.
