Question:
Re: CQD answer published Tuesday, June 7, 2016 -GFCI for Basement Receptacles
RE:cqd tues. june 7th- gfi protection for sump pumps, sewer ejectors etc. Here in every city in NJ, that my company has worked in as long as you use a single receptacle there has not been one inspector who has requested gfi protection for sump pumps, sewer ejectors, freezers, refrigerators etc. common sense should apply. The code is the code but here inspectors use some common sense. Tripped gfi-flooded basement with water and sewage, hundreds of dollars in spoiled meat? Tough call. nj#11127.whats your take on using single receptacles for fixed appliances in such areas?

Answer:
Hey Glockster thanks for your question. The exception for 210.8(A)(5) that allowed omitting GFCI protection for single receptacles in unfinished basements was deleted during the processing of the 2008 NEC. If your jurisdiction is using the 2008 NEC or later editions, without amending those rules, then not providing GFCI protection violates the NEC. There was some concern expressed during the change process about nuisance tripping, flooded basements, spoiled food, etc. but all those concerns seem to have subsided because the exception has not been reinserted.
