Question:
Hello code friends, the National Electrical Code requires multiple service disconnects to be grouped. How close together, or far apart are service disconnects permitted to be, and still meet the be considered grouped? I look forward to your answer, thanks, James Haverford
A
Answer:
Hello James, the word “grouped” is not defined anywhere in the NEC
®. Like many other rules in the NEC
® it is open to interpretation by the local AHJ. The “grouping” rule is to help facilitate a speedy shut down of all unnecessary power to a building that is experiencing some type of life-threatening event like a fire. When possible, having all service disconnects in close proximity to each other is preferable, as it makes it easier for emergency personnel when shutting the power off. It is always advisable to consult with the AHJ on matters like these.
