Question:
Good Day Code Friends,
For residential wiring, can I fasten a metal box to a wood stud by driving two nails through the box where the wires are?
Adam Fox
A
Answer:
Hi Adam, The fastening means (screws or nails) are generally restricted to outside the box. Many manufacturers provide boxes with mounting screws or nails for installation. That said, there are some boxes without mounting brackets or integral nails of screws from the manufacturer. The NEC does permit nails through the box for mounting, but the nail must be within a 1/4 inch of the back or end of the box. See Section 314.23(B)(1)
