Question:
Good morning CQD followers. Does armored cable secured in cable tray count as "protected from physical damage"? And what is the difference between "physical damage" and "severe physical damage" as seen in several of the XXX.12 (eg 358, 368, 376, 380, 386, 388 & 392) of Chapter 3? Regards, Clyde Sarrow

Answer:
Hi Clyde, great question. The terminology is not defined by the
NEC®. However, the demarcation line used by many AHJs is operability. For example: physical damage of a metallic raceway could be corrosion caused by the surrounding environmental conditions, and severe physical damage of that same metallic raceway could be forklift damage rendering the circuit/feeder inoperable. It is always recommended to check with the AHJ on these types of matters.
