The National Electrical Code(NEC) establishes the minimum requirements for electrical installations, those minimums can always be exceeded at the discretion of the qualified person performing the installation. The minimum requirements for sizing the supply conductors for Storage-Type Water Heaters can be found in Sections 422.13 and 422.10 of the 2014 NEC.
