Question:
Good Morning Charlie,
I was wondering what section in the Code says that when you install a metal or plastic old-work box that it has to be flush with the sheet-rock?
Thanks,
Greg

Answer:
Hi Greg,
Thanks for participating. Article 314 provides the requirements for boxes. Part II of the article includes installation requirements. Section 314.20(A) indicates that in walls or ceilings with a surface of concrete, tile, gypsum, plaster, or other noncombustible material, boxes employing a flush-type cover or faceplate must be installed so that the front edge of the box, plaster ring, extension ring, or listed extender will not be set back of the finished surface more than 1 ⁄4 in.. In walls and ceilings constructed of wood or other combustible surface material, boxes, plaster rings, extension rings, or listed extenders shall be flush with the finished surface or project therefrom. Section 314.23(D) requires such boxes to be rigidly secured to the wall surface by an identified means such as anchors, clamps or fittings. Many old-work boxes (cut-in) boxes are manufactured with a securing or clamping means that is an integral part of the box and the assembly is identified for this application. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
